The Metamorphosis of This Alzheimer's Caregiver
The more I learned the more I wanted to know. I learned a great deal about Alzheimer's disease and dementia--including the science. It helped me understand a very mystifying disease. It helped me to put a frame around something that is difficult if not impossible to describe.
Communication in Alzheimer's World
Let's face it, dealing with dementia is not easy. Understanding Alzheimer's disease is not easy...
Alzheimer's World -- Two Circles Trying to Intersect
When Alzheimer's strikes communication and behavior change abruptly -- overnight. It is up to the caregiver to adjust since the person suffering from dementia is incapable of the adjustment. Understanding this need is the first big step.
I became a CareGiver by choice. I cared for my mother for many years. Caregiver is a companion site of the Alzheimer's Reading Room.

Alzheimer's Caregiver Lament -- I can't take her out because she eats with her hands
The positive effects of socialization, initiative, and motivation on the part of Alzheimer's sufferers and their caregiver should not be overlooked. I believe these are as important as the medication......My name is Bob DeMarco, I am an Alzheimer's caregiver. My mother Dorothy, now 93 years old, suffers from Alzheimer's disease. We live our life one day at a time.

I can't tell you how many times I either heard or read these words -- I can't take him/her out because she eats with her hands. I know this -- it is a big problem among Alzheimer's caregivers.
To be honest, I never worried about this. My attitude more or less is -- so be it.

A Good Healthy Conversation in the Morning Helps Dotty and Me
I had fun writing this article. But not nearly as much fun as I had having a good healthy conversation with Dotty this morning.....By Bob DeMarco
Alzheimer's Reading Room

One thing I learned is that a good healthy conversation with Dotty as soon as she wakes up helps improve our day. You might be thinking how do you have a healthy, detailed conversation with some suffering from Alzheimer's disease?
